Rebirth in Cusco

Art Therapy Session with psychologist Steffi Pieters in the café and holistic center ImaginaTé during the Super Blue Moon

“He or she who creates with color from the heart.”

Rebirth visualisation in Miro

I made this in Miro after the session.

AUGUST 31, 2023

Two days ago I walked by ImaginaTé close to my home in Cusco. “Art Therapy” was in the window.

I have never tried Art Therapy and I have never seen the combination before. I have been in psychotherapy with Amela Thrane and Alex Gamberini in Denmark where I also attended breathwork facilitator training. I have visualised my experiences with breathwork many times. So combining art with a therapy session spikes my interest.

Sonqo Llimpiq

I arrange a session with pscyhologist Steffi Pieters  who facilitates the Art Therapy. I read more about her and art therapy in her website:

“Sonqo Llimpiq means in Quechua “he or she who creates with color, from the heart.”

Tears run down my cheeks. I feel an even deeper purpose into why this session is relevant for me. Sonqo Llimpiq seems also to be translated to “Clean heart”

Quecha is the orginal inka language in Peru still spoken by many today.

Cusco was the main capital for the inka empire. For the inkas the snake represents the beginning of a new life.

My intention

Before I come to the session I have shared my intention for the Art Therapy session with Steffi. I also shared that I have been part of a Breathwork Facilitator Training in Copenhagen.

“I have an intention to focus on my soul’s calling specific towards my work. I am transforming my business and would like to go deeper into this. Maybe with a vision board or maybe you have proposals in relation to what you can guide in the art therapy.”

“What a beautiful intention. Reading into it, I would definitely work with the breath and allow it to be expressed in different ways. We would see how things flow in the moment. I have some ideas already.” – Steffi

Scared to move forward

I meet Steffi and introduce myself and put more words into my intention. I add that I want a deeper connection between my strong performer and heart to unfold.

After the intro Steffi asks me to stand up at the window that shows the mountains. Then I can move forward to the other side of the room in my own pace and as I wish to e.g. dancing.

I am thinking: This does not seem like art therapy. Where are the colours? Why should I move and not draw?

I start to move my arms slowly but feel a stop and sit down. If my brain was to decide it would just walk fast to the couch at the other side of the room but for my body the answer is to stop. I am not ready. I feel scared in my stomach to move forward.

The breath helps to ground and let go

My hands fold into pray and I focus on my breath. The breath helps me to let more go.

I feel a bit nausea letting more and more go till I stand up and say: ” I feel so vulnerable”.

I slowly start to move and feel like a ballerina that is about to fall. I notice my breath again and turns into a wolf on the floor as I move forward.

Bringing love to fear leads to freedom

My heart feels big and embrace the fear in my stomach. A beautiful bodily experience that is hard to fully capture in words.

Then I feel so free. I swim in the ocean. My inner child is happy and playful. It’s like I am swimming in playing balls that I recognize from doing in Denmark. I loved it as a child and still do.

Unlocking the entrance to the unknown new place

I see a key. I experience my hands moving and see them unlock. Then I see an opening. There is no door. I feel safe and enter as a snake moving forward into the opening to the new and unknown.

For the inkas the snake represents the beginning of a new life. Cusco was the main capital for the inka empire.

I enter the new place and I experience darkness. I am covered in light like the sun.

Rebirth – magic in the presence

I am on the carpet with closed eyes and my  hand touch the couch. I open my eyes. I am surprised to be at the other side of the room.  I feel like a new born child feeling the carpet to ground and to believe I am here. The carpet looks the same but the bodily experience is completely new. I slowly standup guided by Steffi. I feel like a little child trying to stand up for the first time. I then stand up fully and grounded. I feel my feet.

Magic can seem so far away but it’s right here in this presence.

“I am surprised to be here. I moved so far in such a short time”

The session was 1 hour.

Take-aways

Key learnings

1. The understanding of art is much bigger from the body than from the brain. My brain expexted that therapy art was limited to drawing but the understanding of art is much bigger with the body: Dancing, expressing a feeling, breathing, expressing love from the heart, inner pictures that shows from movement and body sensations.

2. Moving slowly is the fastest way to get there. I often have had a tendency to rush with the risk of loosing myself and my connection to my body.

3. Moving with the body there is an experience of flow that unites performance with the heart. Often my performer has run so fast that I have lost touch with body and heart.

4. The breath is a gateway to ground and let go.  Connection to the breath is hard work daily to connect to the present – to ground (to avoid stress, connect with the body, increase creativity and many other benefits).

5. Love can embrace fear and lead to freedom. From breathwork and psychotherapy  I am now deeply connected to my heart and I am amazed what my heart is capable of.

Touch and draw feet

Feeling my feet are crucial for grounding of the performer. For keeping the performer in the present moment. I also apply my breath for that.

Vision board

After the session I created my vision board.

My fire (performer and passion) is united with my heart and feet moving slowly to fulfill my vision and mission:

To reveal the mystery of love and how to integrate love in everyday life.

The Love Mystery

Love has has tight conditions in a time where many have busy lives, more and more experience stress, and we are bombarded with data from media and tech-giants. We can get challenged to feel the most important in life.

Anne-Kathrine Kjær Christensen has left Denmark and travels the world to follow her mission to learn more about love and how to integrate it in everyday life. She shares in a blog and works on finishing a book.
