Temazcal in Mexico

November 25, 2023

I experience my first Tamazcal in Mazunte in the state Oaxaca in Mexico.

What is Tamazcal?

Tamazcal is a traditional Mexican ceremony practiced by the Mayans and reportedly also the Aztecs based on ancestral traditions.

The preparation was to eat lightly a few days before and drink plenty of fluids and to set an intention.

Temazcal is a small sweat lodge that aims to cleanse the digestive system, energy and what no longer serves us in body and mind – and to strengthen consciousness and experience rebirth. It is said that a sherman facilitates.

Ceremonial cocoa and entrance in the womb

The man who receives me introduces himself as “ministre” from Mexico City who live in Mazunte today. Around his stomach and head he wore chumpis, which I know from Peru as belts that protect the energy.

We were 7 people from different parts of the world, each with our own intention. In some tamazcal they include psychedelics, but this one was with natural medicine.

We received a cup of ceremonial cacao to open the heart and raise awareness while the minister shared tales of the ancient traditions and the process we were going to experience. A Mexican woman translated his words into English.

Temazcal symbolizes the womb into which we entered after the introduction. A woman filled hot stones into the center of our circle, so the little tamazcal quickly warmed up.

Meeting the inner warrior

We went through 4 different phases with music from the minister and a woman who also guided us. Along the way we sang, shouted, laughed and connected with our inner child. Continuously, more hot stones and water were added to create additional heat.

The 3rd phase is the hardest, said the minister – it gets really hot, and it is necessary to meet our inner warrior. It had rained at tamazcal, so it was not as hot as it could be. In comparison, what we know as “saunagus” in Denmark is warmer, but I still felt a mental test in the small sweat lodge close with the others in the dark enclosed tamazcal, where I was located furthest from the exit.

I focused on my breath, which, according to the minister, is the most important thing for the warrior to keep calm and meet the flower of the heart, as the minister calls it, when we are in balance.

We are all 1

After the 3 phases we bowed down one by one and came out dripping with sweat and had nice cooling water over us. Next we all stood close in a circle in a pool and dived together.

“We are all 1 – that is true love” said the minister as I put my hand on my heart.

We got out of the pool and one by one we shared in the circle. I felt the ground beneath my feet, my body shaking, and shared my experience in the circle with a torch in hand. I closed my eyes to connect more deeply to my experience, which was a refreshing rebirth in Mazunte Mágico, where I felt the connection to the Mexican roots.❤️
